Date of Issue: 15th September 2010

To mark the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain, Royal Mail issued a retail booklet and generic Smilers Sheet. The stamp used is, the Spitfire stamp from the Design Classics set issued in January 2009.  A retail booklet containing Spitfire and Concorde stamps was announced for the previous September however that was ammended to coincide with this 70th Anniversary.

Although the Battle of Britain was fought over several months from July - September, it was on Sunday the 15th September that the battle reached it's zenith when the Luftwaffe launched two massive daylight bombing raids primarily on London. It took all the resources of Keith Park's Fighter Group to successfully repel these attacks. This defeat convinced the Germans that they were unable to break the backbone of the R.A.F. by air power alone and also resulted in the postponement of Operation Sealion - the German's planned invasion of mainland Britain.
Thus, the 15th September is known as 'Battle of Britain Day'
