As well as producing it's own handstamps for the First Day of a new stamp Issue (FDI), the Royal Mail allows individuals and companies to sponsor handstamps of their own design - subject to Royal Mail approval, for both FDI purposes and to commemorate events, anniversaries etc throughout the year even though a new stamp or set of stamps has not been released to mark this occasion.
These handstamps are available to all from the relevant Special Handstamp Centre for a limited period of time - often for one day only. Please refer to our Sponsored Handstamps page for more information on individual handstamps.
Whenever possible, for these non-FDI handstamps we will produce a very limited number of covers using one of our generic covers with a stamp / stamps relevant to the occasion in question.
Carling Cup Final 2012 - 26th February 2012 Cover £2.50
We have produced 5 covers featuring the 1st class (football) Lion and shield stamp and label (vary with each cover) from the Memories of Wembley Smilers sheet realesed in 2007. In an entertaining game between Cardiff City of the Championship and Liverpool of the Premiership, honours were even at 1-1 after 90 minutes and were even again after Extra Time at 2-2. In the penalty shoot out, it was Liverpool that prevailed 3-2 and they duly lifted the cup for a record breaking eighth time.
